	My name is Calvin Ross Carl and I am a Portland-based creative director, designer, branding consultant, and artist.

For nearly twenty years, I’ve worked with companies ranging from startups to Fortune 500 to bring focus, clarity, and differentiation to their brands. With a focus on brand strategy, I create internal and consumer alignment around a distinct position and identity that can be communicated consistently across any channel—whether it is branding, strategy, product, video, digital, print, or environmental experiences.


In a not so distant past life, I have been a nationally exhibited artist and was the former co-founder and director of Carl &#38;amp; Sloan Contemporary.

	Biography


	Calvin Ross Carl’s work balances the humble realities of American life with the unrealistic ideals sold in design and advertising. His work adopts the optimistic visual language and mechanized mode of creation associated with these worlds. The inhumane aspects of design are counterbalanced with imagery and emotionally charged words acting as concrete poetics. His paintings and objects become ambiguous slogans, provocations, and disillusioned statements about one’s self and the surrounding world.
However, there is always some light in the dark. Closer inspection reveals personalized narratives and levity with the artist’s hand being overtly evident in the process. The final result makes room for comfort and introspection within the dualities of hope and fear, love and loss, and our futures and our pasts. This creates confusion between one’s blind optimism for an ideal future and one’s willingness to succumb to the idea where this may be as good as it gets.
Calvin Ross Carl is an artist, designer and former co-director of Carl &#38;amp; Sloan Contemporary in Portland, OR. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Intermedia in 2008 from Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA). He most recently was included in the Portland 2016 Biennial, curated by Michelle Grabner, Out of Sight 2016: A Survey of Contemporary Art in Seattle, WA, and a survey of Northwest abstract painters at The Marylhurst University Art Gym. Carl has exhibited at LVL3 Gallery (Chicago, IL), Cerritos College (Los Angeles, CA), Ditch Projects (Eugene, OR), Lawndale Art Center (Houston, TX), Platform Gallery (Seattle, WA), NEPO House (Seattle, WA), and Clark College Archer Gallery (Vancouver, WA). He has also exhibited in Portland, OR at Half/Dozen Gallery, Gallery Homeland, HQHQ, New American Art Union, Blackfish Gallery, and Tractor Gallery. Carl is represented by SEASON in Seattle, WA.

Curatorial

	Carl &#38;amp; Sloan Contemporary was an art gallery in Portland, Oregon focused on artists whose practices create dialogue surrounding culture and critical art theory. As co-founder and director, I curated exhibitions and represented emerging and established artists from across the United States. The gallery went on to receive critical acclaim from national press and arts organizations.
Carl &#38;amp; Sloan Contemporary was founded in 2015 with Ashley Sloan and conducted 12 exhibitions over 2 years.

	In the Pacific Northwest, Rainier beer is as legendary as the mountain it’s named after. It’s been the unofficial official beer of the Northwest for over a century, and they wanted help staying that way.

	After wrapping up Rainier’s new brand strategy and identity, I lead a complete revamp of their iconic packaging. We focused on modernizing their appeal to the northwest’s outdoorsy lifestyle, creating a design system for new products, and doubling down on their most important asset, the big red R.

A classic refreshed.Rainier has been growing like crazy over the last decade, and this redesign ensured they can continue growing into the next one. With new beers on the horizon, and a couple other secrets up their sleeve, I’ve been thankful to join them on this ride, and share a few beers along the way.

	Over a century ago, a German brewmaster and explorer was on the impossible mission to brew the perfect beer. Yet after years of searching, he fulfilled his destiny by discovering the pure waters of Washington state—and so the Olympia Brewing Company was born.

	Over the decades, Olympia became more known for its low price than its adventurous beginnings. This changed when parent company, Pabst Brewing, decided to breathe new life into it. The challenge was to “premium-ize” the brand and bring it back to its authentic roots of exploration—which included creating and testing multiple new products.

	If it ain’t broke
The original Olympia logo was a damn near perfect gem of Americana style design. It was dusted off, polished, and became the hub for the whole new brand identity.

	Committed to heritageThe goal was to bring the spirit of the Pacific Northwest back to Olympia. We helped scout locations for a new Olympia vodka distillery and hours were spent digging through the museum archives of the Schmidt family, the founders of Olympia Brewing.&#38;nbsp;

	Race Face is legendary in the mountain biking world. They were some of the originals carving trails on the North Shore, and their street cred (mountain cred?) hasn’t faultered since.

	However, Race Face was going where they’ve never gone before—they started making wheels. Riders are hard on their wheels and they’re even hard on the companies that make them. Race Face needed to take a stand, so we let their wheels do the talking.

The wheel made me do it.Race Face put all their marketing muscle behind this campaign for a whole year, and it got results. It officially put them on the map of mountain bike wheel manufacturers, and most importantly, it got sales. Look for one of these shit-talking wheels on a bike near you.
